Southern California is often known for its endless sunshine and vibrant beaches. But, it also boasts a collection of charming mountain towns worth exploring. Here are seven cozy mountain towns in Southern California that are perfect for your next relaxing or adventurous getaway.
1. Big Bear Lake
Tucked away in the San Bernardino Mountains, Big Bear Lake is a year-round haven for outdoor enthusiasts. Whether you’re seeking winter sports in the snow-covered months or lakeside relaxation during the summer, Big Bear has it all. The village is dotted with quaint shops, inviting restaurants, and the alpine charm that defines a mountain retreat.
Nestled in the San Jacinto Mountains of Southern California, Idyllwild is a cute and cozy mountain town with a vibe that’s all about laid-back charm. This place is a haven for outdoor folks with incredible hiking trails waiting to be explored. Idyllwild also has a quirky village with great places to eat and shop around at. AND, they have a dog Mayor named Max and are extremely dog-friendly!
Perched at an elevation of over 5,000 feet, Lake Arrowhead is a mountain resort community known for its stunning lake views and upscale ambiance. The Lake Arrowhead Village offers shopping, dining, and entertainment, while the surrounding forested hills provide ample opportunities for hiking and exploring. Note that lake access is only available for residents, but there’s plenty to do surrounding the lake!
Nestled in the San Gabriel Mountains, Wrightwood is a charming town that serves as the gateway to the Mountain High ski resort. The town offers a very friendly, laid-back atmosphere and easy access to hiking trails.
Mount Baldy is an unincorporated community situated in the San Gabriel Mountains, straddling San Bernardino County and Los Angeles County in Southern California, with the county line cutting through the area. It lies at the base of Mount San Antonio, which is commonly referred to as “Mount Baldy,” giving the community its name.
Nestled in the Cuyamaca Mountains in San Diego County, Julian is a historic gold mining town. Famous for its apple orchards and homemade apple pies, Julian offers a taste of nostalgia with its wooden storefronts and vintage atmosphere. Explore the local shops, savor a slice of pie, and take a step back in time.
Surrounded by apple orchards and rolling hills, Oak Glen is a hidden gem in the San Bernardino Mountains. The town is known for its apple picking, cider mills, and family-friendly farms. A visit to Oak Glen is a chance to experience the beauty of the changing seasons and of course, apple-infused everything.

What is Oak Glen?
Oak Glen is located in Southern California in San Bernardino County near the city of Yucaipa. It’s a roughly five-mile stretch featuring numerous apple orchards, cider mills, and charming shops, making it a popular destination to visit during the fall season.
My recommendation would be to begin your day at Snow-Line Orchard. During fall it’s especially busy and you’ll likely have to wait in long lines on weekends. But don’t worry, they move quickly! Snow-Line Orchard is famous for their Mini Apple Cider Donuts and man, they are worth the hype! Watch them being made right in front of you and order a half dozen or a full dozen (or several dozen in my opinion). Snow-Line is also a cidery and winery, offering hot apple cider, cider slushies, and hard cider/wine tastings. They have beautiful outdoor seating beneath trees that show off fall foilage in late autumn and there’s often live music being performed. Families can shop around at the gift shop and even go raspberry picking.
Next, make your way to Oak Tree Mountain. This family-friendly park offers many entertainment options for the whole family to enjoy, including train rides, a petting zoo, axe throwing, local artisans, and a giant mountain tubing slide. Be sure to snag a famous mile-high pie from Apple Annies Bakery & Restaurant, and grab a beverage from the Common Ground Public House.
With all that adventuring and exploring, you’ll likely have worked up quite the appetite. Whilshire’s serves wood-fired pizza and is also a coffee shop. They have the most beautiful country-style outdoor seating and are mercantile offering heirloom hard ciders and gift items and are now owned and operated by the Riley Family Enterprise. I would highly recommend a lunch and coffee break here to split up your day!
And last but certainly not least, head to Los Rios Rancho for a little apple picking. Parking is free and you’ll easily find a few workers handing out bags and giving demonstrations on proper apple-picking etiquette. Los Rios Rancho is the oldest and largest operating apple farm in Southern California. They offer three different types of u-pick apples by the pound.

While this itinerary is for a quick day trip, if you are looking to extend your stay, there are very few locations actually in the town of Oak Glen, but plenty of nearby cities like Yucaipa and Cherry Valley with lots of quick accommodation options. Castle Rock Trail, located in Big Bear, California, is a 2.7-mile roundtrip hike and one of the most popular trails to explore in the area. Reaching the peak rewards hikers with breathtaking panoramic views of the expansive Big Bear Lake and its picturesque surroundings. While the hike is considered moderately difficult, the stunning vistas make the trek well worthwhile.
Directions & Parking
After passing the Big Bear Dam en route to Big Bear City, the road takes a little U-turn inland. This is where you’ll find Castle Rock Trail. It’s important to note that parking can be challenging. The only parking is small shoulder along the side of the highway that requires you park and then cross the busy street to get to the trailhead. With limited parking space, you may have to park at a different turn out and walk a bit along the highway. Once you cross the street, you’ll be greeted with a map that details the trails in and around the area.
The Trailhead
Near the map, you’ll also see you will see the sign for Castle Rock, noting that the official trailhead. The elevation in Big Bear paired with immediately climbing a heavy accent up the mountain, KICKED MY BUTT. Since it’s only a little over a mile to reach the top, it’s a tough but quick climb in my opinion. The path is also guided by what I thought appeared to be quite literally little castle rocks along the way to keep you going in the right direction.
As you begin to catch glimpses of Big Bear Lake, you’ll encounter numerous smaller side trails. Keep an eye out for the stone markers and use them as your guide to explore these additional paths.
The Peak
The pinnacle of the hike is the Castle Rock peak. The peak is a large rock formation (a castle rock I suppose is what it’s meant to resemble) where hikers are rewarded with a 360-degree panorama that includes the San Bernardino Mountains, the Mojave Desert, and on clear days, even glimpses of the San Gabriel Mountains in the distance.

Seasonal Considerations: While the trail is open year-round, be aware that snow can accumulate in winter, requiring proper equipment for a safe hike. Spring and fall offer milder temperatures, making these seasons ideal for a more comfortable experience.
Pack Essentials: Bring plenty of water, snacks, and sunscreen. Wear sturdy hiking boots and dress in layers, as temperatures can vary throughout the day.

Morning Bliss at Big Bear Coffee Company
The best start to any day is coffee of course. We started our day of exploring by first stopping at Big Bear Coffee Company. The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans welcomes you as you step into this cozy haven. I ordered a cold brew with peanut butter infused in the beans and WOW, it was as mind blowing and good as it sounds. They had other flavored beans for sale, so we each purchased a bag as well. But, I promise, with a cup of Joe in hand, you’ll be ready to embrace the day’s adventures.
Hiking Castle Rock Trail
After fueling up, we headed to Castle Rock Trail for a morning hike that offered breathtaking views of Big Bear Lake and the surrounding mountains. The trail, well-marked and suitable for various skill levels, leads you through towering pines and unveils stunning panoramas. The summit offers a vantage point that makes the effort absolutely worthwhileโideal for capturing those Instagram-worthy moments.
Shopping in The Village
Following the hike, we headed to The Village, Big Bear’s charming shopping and entertainment district. Lined with quaint shops, boutiques, and cafes, The Village exudes a festive atmosphere. We browsed the local shops and then enjoyed a beer and an appetizer from Big Bear Brewing Company.
An Afternoon at Magic Mountain
For an adrenaline-packed afternoon, we made our way over to Magic Mountain and take a ride on the Alpine Slide, a Big Bear classic. The Alpine Slide promises fun for all ages and adds an adventurous twist to your perfect day in Big Bear. They also have a coaster you can ride as well.
And finally, it was time for us to head back home. As the sun set, we were able to catch the enchanting Christmas lights that adorn the streets, turning Big Bear into a festive wonderland . Be sure to take your time to soak in the magic before bidding farewell to this idyllic mountain retreat.

The Trailhead
To embark on this adventure, head to the charming town of Wrightwood, located about 75 miles northeast of Los Angeles. From Wrightwood, take the Acorn Drive and then turn onto the unpaved Big Horn Mine Road, leading you to the trailhead. The trail begins at Vincent Gap, situated at an elevation of approximately 6,600 feet. The trailhead is well-marked, and you’ll find a trail map that outlines the route to Big Horn Mine.
A Walk Through History
The trail starts off as a very easy stroll. You’ll then start a gradual climb along a rock path that offers incredible scenic views. The trail follows the historic Vincent Gulch Mining Road, which was once used for transporting ore from the mines in the late 1800s. As you trek along the path, you’ll encounter remnants of the mining era, such as rusted equipment, abandoned structures, and interpretive signs detailing the area’s rich history.
Reaching The Mine
After a little under 2 miles, you’ll arrive at the Big Horn Mine. Perched at an elevation of 7,600 feet, the mine offers a stunning backdrop of the San Gabriel Mountains. Explore the remnants of the mining operation, including the mine shaft and the crumbling walls of the bunkhouse.
According to local lore, the mine’s origins are attributed to Charles Tom Vincent, who, as the legend goes, stumbled upon it while hunting bighorn sheep in the vicinity. The inception of the mine dates back to 1895, with its development reaching a depth of 300 feet and extending to a length of 1,200 feet. Historical records suggest that the mine yielded a substantial fortune, with over $100,000 worth of gold extracted. In the years following this prosperous era, the mine changed hands multiple times, eventually falling under the ownership of an individual responsible for crafting the wagon road that now facilitates the hike to the mine.

Be sure to acquire a hiking permit from the Ranger Station in town before heading on your journey. From the Ranger Station, the trailhead is about 0.8 miles away. Before embarking on the hike, it’s also crucial to check weather conditions and trail updates to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. You’ll alway need to leave the pups at home for this oe unfortunately; the trail is not pet-friendly.
The Ascent: Deer Springs Trail wastes no time immersing hikers in the beauty of the San Jacinto Mountains; it immediately gets your heart rate up right off the bat. As the trail winds its way upward, it rewards hikers with several scenic overlooks. These vantage points provide an excellent opportunity to catch your breath while marveling at the expansive views of the surrounding valleys and peaks. The higher you ascend, the more the landscape unfolds, revealing the true majesty of the San Jacinto Mountains.
Summit Views: Reaching the summit of Suicide Rock is an achievement worth savoring. The panoramic views from this vantage point are nothing short of spectacular. The San Jacinto Valley, the Coachella Valley, and the distant Salton Sea come into view, providing a sense of accomplishment and a breathtaking reward for the challenging hike. Be prepared though, some days the fog will roll in and steal away your incredible views at the peak.

Hiking Stonewall Peak
We began our day by heading to Cuyamaca Rancho State Park to conquer Stonewall Peak. The trailhead is just a short drive from Julian, and the hike offers an easy/moderate accent with a rewarding payoff. The final stretch requires you to climb granite steps, offering panoramic views all the way up to the summit.
After our hike up Stonewall Peak, we rewarded ourselves with beer and pizza at Julian Beer Co. We sat out on the patio and enjoyed the beautiful Autumn weather, Julian Beer Co boasts a diverse selection of brews, from hoppy IPAs to rich stouts, and their pizza and BBQ is delicious.
